What Should I Podcast About: How To Choose a Podcast Topic
If this is your first time here, then welcome to the Best Tech Setup blog, here you will find all times of advice ranging from the practical, like “How to Build a Cool Tech Setup”, to the theoretical, like “What Is a Gaming Mouse?”.
If not, you probably got here via the links at the bottom of the “How To Podcast: The Beginner’s Guide to Podcasting” article.
Outside of the Beginner’s Guide to Podcasting, this is perhaps the most important article on Podcasting because this dives deep into helping you on the first and most important step of your Podcasting journey: choosing a topic.
The First Thing You Need To Know
The first thing you need to know if you want to start Podcasting is what you want your Podcast to be about. While this may seem like a no-brainer, nothing is worse than a Podcast with identity issues.
If you do not know the driving topic behind your podcast, you will struggle with every single thing else. That is because everything else stems from this moment right here.
This is also one of the things that holds people back from Podcasting the most. Worry and confusion. They hee and haw back and forth between, “This seems interesting, I want to do this” and “This seems scary, I don’t want to do this”.
“I don’t even know what I would Podcast about.”
“Why would anyone listen to me?” This is another feeling that holds people back, and is known as Imposter Syndrome. If you are feeling this way, or want to learn more about it, check out this article, “What Is Imposter Syndrome, and How To Deal With It”.
While bad, Imposter Syndrome comes AFTER you have already decided on a topic you wish to pursue. Do you now see why choosing a topic is the most critical part of Podcasting? Without this first crucial step, nothing else can take place. Not even the negative stuff.
After you decide what you want to Podcast about, the next step is forming the correct mindset on what exactly Podcasting is. Podcasting is you spending long hours and doing hard work for a return that may never come. At its core, Podcasting is an entrepreneurial venture. There is risk.
You have to think of this as a marathon, and not a sprint, because that is exactly what it is. Endurance, perseverance, and tenacity are all words you should know, because they are exactly what you will need to last in this game.
Podcasting is just like the stock market. Think long term and you will succeed.
Once you settle on the topic you want to dive into, double check that it is something that energizes you, something that you like (if not love). This passion, coupled with determination and discipline, will push you thru the tough times.
If you can’t see yourself talking about or interacting with the same thing 6 months, 1 year, or even 5 years (if you’re really determined) from now, DON’T DO IT. It’ll be a waste of your time, and will turn you off of Podcasting when it wasn’t Podcasting’s fault, it was your topic’s fault.
Some other tips for picking a niche:
- Look at what is popular (Protip: Popularity = Large Audiences). Create a list of all the popular things that you wouldn’t mind Podcasting about. Then narrow down that list to only the popular things that you would love to Podcast about.
- Look for niches that have dedicated fanbases. These niches don’t have to have the most people, or be the most popular, but they should have a core group that are REALLY into the topic. They will spend money, time, and effort beyond the casual fan.
- If you are really knowledgeable about a specific topic, consider creating an educational Podcast that teaches other people your skills. Chances are if you are really interested in it, others are too. It doesn’t matter if you feel other’s will think its boring, it lights a fire in you. Eventually, you will become THE GO-TO EXPERT on that topic and can totally own that space.
Now that you have a topic (or at least a better idea on how to choose a topic), the next thing you NEED TO KNOW is who your target audience is. You can read that by clicking on the link below.
